"Are you disappointed that I wasn't the one you were waiting for?"

Ihedia's mind raced in this confusing situation.

How on earth could he.................

Kayan dismounted and grabbed her wrist.

Ihedia pleaded with him.

"Let me go."

But there was no answer.

Ihedia begged him again.

"Please, please let me go, Master Kayan."

Kayan's cold gaze pierced her.

"You think that's possible?"

"....."

"The slave was caught trying to escape, and your life is now in my hands."

Hearing Kayan's words, Ihedia lost all willpower.

***

She was taken by Kayan to a mansion in the capital.

She didn’t know exactly where, as she had never traveled outside of the designated area, but it didn't seem to be too far from Bayate.

She didn’t know what the circumstances were, but it seemed to be a separate residence for Kayan to live in.

Kayan's villa had a very different feel to it than Bayate’s, but that was the last thing on Ihedia's mind right now.

Kayan led Ihedia into a large room on the second floor.

He gave chilling orders to his servants to stand guard in front of the door.

Then he warned her, his face as cold as if warmth had never existed in the first place.

"You will not step foot outside of this house without my permission."

Ihedia met Kayan's cold gaze and spoke up.

"Please let me go.”

"...."

“If you ever cared about me for even a moment."

Ihedia knew it wouldn't be possible, but she asked Kayan one last time, desperate.

His eyes were dry, as if they held no emotion, but there was a hint of hurt in them.

"You are so impudent. You don't know what happens to runaway slaves. You could die at my hands right now and you wouldn't have a word to say."

"Master Kayan."

Kayan turned around.

He started to turn away, to leave, but something stirred in him, and he turned back to her, his voice filled with anger.

"Is this what it was going to come down to?"

"...."

"How ridiculous I must have looked when I smiled and said I like you.”

Kayan let out a hollow laugh, as if laughing at himself.

"How long have I let you live in the Bayate as a slave? Did you despise me so much that you couldn't endure it even for a moment?"

Kayan truly resented her.

Not because the slave he'd been watching had run away, but because he'd been betrayed by the woman he loved.

Ihedia found Kayan's attitude puzzling.

She didn't think he cared much for her.

He might have cared for her for a moment, but only as a slave.

Ihedia felt a pang of pity for Kayan, who was now lashing out in anger at her.

'Why...................'

At the same time, her mind was confused by the image of him and Netira in the room.

"Master Kayan, I.................."

"It doesn't matter what you try to persuade me. You've been mine since I decided to bring you back from Elmir, and you're not going anywhere without my permission."

Kayan slammed the door harshly behind him with all the emotion he could muster and disappeared.

Ihedia collapsed on the spot, her entire body drained of strength.

She didn't know why Kayan had this strange obsession, but the reality she faced now was one of despair.

The fact that Kayan had come to this place meant that he knew she would escape.

How on earth...............

No matter how hard she wracked her brain, she couldn't figure out how he knew.

In any case, there was only one conclusion.

She couldn’t escape this place.

Unless Kayan Bayate recanted her feelings for him.

Maybe this was it after all.

She wondered if she would ever have another chance to escape Anut.

Her chest felt tight, as if she had entered a maze with obstacles on all sides.

She couldn't move around as freely here as she had in Bayate.

It was worse now that she had to get used to everyone in the mansion watching her every move.

It was like being trapped in Elmir’s North Palace.

Ihedia's eyes slowly began to redden as she stared at the closed door.

It had been days since they'd locked her up in the mansion.

***

It should have calmed down a bit by now, but the burning emotions in Kayan's chest hadn't.

He couldn't bring himself to go see Ihedia anymore.

The sight of her resentful face would unleash another unmanageable rage in him.

Kayan had been like that ever since Ihedia had tried to escape from the cave.

Until the very end, he held out the futile hope that Ihedia would not leave, that she would choose him in the end.

But when he saw her at the meeting point, having made elaborate preparations for her escape, he had lost all hope.

He realized that even if she were to flee as a slave and be captured and have her life taken, she could not live intimately with a barbarian.

The realization pained Kayan as if something inside him was being torn apart, but he could not let Ihedia go.

So he brought her to this villa and locked her up.

He wanted to keep her close to him, even if it meant imprisoning her.

Kayan looked around the mansion, which was modeled after Elmir’s palace.

I thought you'd like it.

He had hoped that if he made this small effort, she would one day open up to him completely.

Kayan berated himself and gave a bitter chuckle at his past self.

He couldn't even begin to fathom what Ihedia was thinking.

She should be even more disgusted with the barbarian who had lost his senses and was rampaging mad, but Kayan was willing to endure it if it was the only way to keep her with him.

He couldn't imagine life without her now.

It didn't matter if she was a shell of herself for the rest of her life.

Contempt near was better than longing far away.

As Kayan stood in the garden, staring wordlessly up at the window of Ihedia's bedroom, someone approached  him.

He shifted his gaze as the figure grew closer.

"Kayan."

It was Netira.

Kayan's expression was impassive as he turned to her.

He had sent word to Netira that he was leaving Bayate, and now that she was here in person, it seemed she had something else to tell him.

Perhaps she couldn’t accept the fact that he was living here with Ihedia.

Kayan's expressionless demeanor suddenly turned to annoyance.

"I came to see for myself." (Netira)

"...."

"I need to know if that ridiculous letter is real." (Netira)

Netira's eyes briefly rested on the exotically decorated exterior of the mansion.

She clasped her hands together as her anger grew.

Netira asked, her voice filled with uncontrollable rage.

"Is it true that you have taken my slave?"

"Yes."

Netira's shoulders shook with intense emotion.

She clenched her teeth together and let her voice drift with murderous intent.

"You know that every slave in Bayate belongs to me."

"No matter what you say, I cannot give her to you."

"And if I must have her back?"

Kayan's eyes glowed like a feral's as he looked at Netira, the tension in the air threatening to explode.

"Netira."

"..."

"You are Master's flesh and blood, you are my sister, and I owe the Bayate family a great favor, and if the house is in crisis, or if you are in trouble, I will do everything in my power to help you, but that is all."

"...."

"Don't cross any more lines."

The words made Netira clench her fists even harder, her nails digging into her flesh.

Netira wished this was all a dream.

When Kayan sent her a letter saying that he was taking Ihedia and moving out of Bayate, it felt like the sky was falling.

Unable to contain her anger, she beat the maid who delivered the letter so brutally that she was unable to move a limb.

When Ihedia left the mansion and was never heard from again, it was assumed that she had simply used the pass to escape.

It was easy enough to search for a place where a slave might be hiding, she thought, if she could just catch her and make her pay for it.

But here she was, living here with Kayan.

Netira thought the slave had cured her of her skin disease and let her do whatever she wanted.

How foolish of her, Netira berated herself.

To lure Kayan away with that ugly mask.

Ihedia had so easily gotten what Netira hadn't gotten in decades, no matter what she did.

She couldn't stand it anymore.

She hated Kayan enough to want to kill him for betraying her by falling for such a woman.

Netira stepped closer to Kayan.

He saw her hand go up, but Kayan didn't dodge.

Zap!

Netira burst into tears and slapped Kayan hard across the cheek.

Kayan's expression remained indifferent despite her fiery rage.

Then he turned to the bodyguards guarding the mansion.

"The master of Bayate has decided it is time for her to leave, so you will respectfully escort her."

Kayan walked away, leaving a humiliated and tearful Netira in his wake.
